Feature Friday: Kelly Sharkey

Hello Everyone! I'm so excited to be blogging on my first Feature Friday! The lovely bride I'd like to introduce you to is Mia Yun.

Mia was married on July 25th, 2009 at the beautiful Jonathan Edwards Winery but we got down to the beauty business at the Mystic Marriott in Groton, CT. I met Mia and her bridal party there and I had a great time getting them all dolled up for the wedding. Mia wanted a natural yet special look for her wedding day so we went with a clean romantic hairstyle with a slight side part. The makeup was kept light and natural to accentuate her gorgeous features.

The wedding was photographed by the talented Leslie Dumke Studio. I'm so proud to say that Leslie's photographs of Mia's special day were published in Brides Connecticut. My first published wedding!!
Here are some of the fabulous photos.

It was such a pleasure working with Mia and meeting her wonderful friends and family.

Congrats Mia. I wish you and your hubby a lifetime of happiness.

xoxo, Kelly

What's Happening Wednesdays:

New Thursday Blog Series

Hi all, Kelly Sharkey here! Jennie and I are excited to announce a new Thursday Blog series geared toward relationships. We will be blogging about all sorts of topics from combining styles when moving in together to the joys of wedded bliss. Think of it as the JFBL version of Carrie Bradshaw's column on Sex and the City (my absolute favorite show).

We'd love to hear any topic ideas that you might have or advice that you might need and we'll even try to get a relationship expert to help us out once in a while.
Stay tuned to the JFBL blog for our new relationship series on Thursdays!

In addition, JFBL would like to say farewell and good luck the Chelsea of CJ Styles who has taken on a new full time endeavor and will no longer be blogging with us. We will miss you Chelsea! We wish you all the best and hope you'll come back to visit us occasionally.

Beauty Tip Tuesday: No Pain No Gain

Ok, let's face it.  A waxing appointment is no fun feat.  It's not relaxing or enjoyable in any way really.  Here are a few pointers that will help to ease the pain.

1.) take 2 Advil one hour prior to you waxing appointment.

2.) Exfoliate your skin the night before but don't apply any lotion to your skin on the day off.

3.) Don't schedule your appointment when your red-headed step sister is visiting or even a week before.

4.) Go to a professional that you trust.  Believe it or not, there is an art to waxing and a lot of the pain has to do with how the wax is applied and it not being removed properly.

5.) Ask your professional if she has a mild wax for sensitive skin.  Azulene is a really great gentle wax.

Must Have Monday-ROC Retinol Deep Wrinkle Night Cream

Recently I have been noticing a lot more fine lines and some pretty serious expression lines on my forehead.  A common concern for so many of us 30 +.

A few weeks ago, I was reading up on suggested beauty products in my monthly issue of Allure when I came across an article on ROC products.  I decided to do a little experiment and try one of their anti-aging products to see if they really work.

4 weeks later and I can honestly say I notice a difference in the over all smoothness of my complexion.  The lines are less noticeable.  The only problem is that my skin is very dry from the treatment and slightly red.  I find I need to use a rich cream on top of the treatment, just to keep my skin soft and hydrated.

This product contains Retinol and a mineral complex of magnesium, zinc, and copper that improves the appearance of fine lines.  The product is formulated to work through the night when our skin is most receptive.

* Make sure to use sun screen when using any kind of product that contains retinal as it will sensitize your skin.

Available at most drugstores.

Beauty TREND Tuesday: Spring Trend Alert

With Fashion week officially kicked off in NYC, I am so inspired by all of the new beauty trends for Spring 2010!  Here's a look at what's hot for the upcoming season:

Digits: The latest OPI collection says it all:  Russian Navy, Lincoln Park After Dark ( my longtime standby), You don't know Jacques, Alpine Snow ( great on the toes!), La Paz-tivitely  Hot, and Gargantuan Green Grape ( can't wait to try it!).

Makeup:  Color is back baby!  I'm so excited about this trend.  Finally, we don't have to be afraid to use a little color.  Pastel eyes are going to be all the rave and bright red lips are sticking around a little longer, just remember to stay matte.  Glossy is taking a back seat!  Color of the season: Peach.

Hair: Deshevelled Chic is the look.  We'll see a lot of "bed-head" styles.  Stock up on plenty of hairspray, there will be lots of teasing and volume, think Brigette Bardot.   Big and messy it is. Thank goodness, we don't have to try so hard.  My favorite style for Spring is the oversized, side braid.

Fashion: My good friend Chelsea of CJSTYLES was lucky enough to go to Fashion Week in NYC this past week.  I can't wait to get the scoop from her on what's hot for 2010!   Stay tuned for some spring "fashion" trends.....

Must Have Monday-The 5 Minute Face by Carmindy

We all know Carmindy from WHAT NOT TO WEAR on TLC.  It's one of my favorite shows on television.  I watch just for the makeover segment!  I met Carmindy a few years ago on my quest for makeup inspiration.  She was signing copies of her new book, The 5 Minute Face, at RJ Julia bookstore in Madison, CT.  Let me tell you, she is just as beautiful in person as she is on the show!  The book is one of my favorites and a really helpful resource for all women!  If you don't have a copy, it's available at Barnes and Noble!

Feature Friday by Lindsay Milan

Happy Friday, beauties! As the newest Jennie Fresa team member, I wanted to kick off the weekend by introducing myself to all you gorgeous gals out there - HELLO!

As we all know, Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and whether you've got a cutie to cuddle with, or you're single and ready to mingle, my thought is, every gal deserves a little pampering!

My advice? Take a little valen-TIME for yourself! Crank up that stereo, paint those digits cherry pie red, and comb your favorite mascara through those "come-hither" lashes of yours. Amp up your look with a va-va-voom 'do to match, and you'll have the DJ playing "Heartbreaker" as your theme song all night long. You go, girls - get your "flirt" on!

Here's how I'll be wearing my hair, and all it takes is a little volumizing gel, hot rollers, and hairspray -

What's your favorite look for a night out on the town?

xo, Lindsay

Valentine's Day Fashion Show

We are so honored to be involved in so many amazing collaborations right now!  Here's a look at one of our most recent projects:

On Saturday night JFBL did the hair and makeup for the runway models at the Valentine's Day Soiree held at Chamard Vineyards in Clinton CT.  Since the models were showing off a mix of sexy and playful lingerie from the Clinton boutique, Beneath the Gown, we wanted to create looks that were fun, sexy and whimsical.  Kelly Sharkey mastered the "bed-head"hair style by skillfully creating just the right amount of volume and waves.  For makeup, we had some fun by adding rhinestones and feather lashes to an otherwise classic look of black eye liner and flirty red lips.  Let's just say, even the guys enjoyed the show!

Attentions CT locals:  Beneath the Gown is running an amazing Valentine's Day special right now!  It's the perfect chance to buy something romantic for your man!  When you buy a top, you get 50% off the bottom of any set.  Also, $50-$75 OFF selected items while supplies last.  Call 860-304-7399 or stop by the boutique at 104 East Main St. Clinton CT

What's Happening Wednesday: New Sights!

We have come a long way since first launching Jennie Fresa Beauty Library in 2006!  Originally JFBL was only an on-line beauty resource but as business grew over the years, I found myself needing a place to meet clients.  Now that the Beauty Library is an actual place, we needed to let the women of CT and beyond know the great news!

Thank you to the talented and  kind hearted, Tracee Larson of TL Design for all of her hard work and patience.  Tracee designed my site four years ago and I continue to value and respect her work!  There wasn't a doubt in my mind that I would work with her again on this project.

I hope you'll enjoy the updated site, which includes new services, new photos, a link to our blog, a team page and so much more!  Please check it out and let me know what you think!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Crack a Smile

It's that time of year.  The heart of winter as arrived and everyone is suffering from dry, chapped lips, right?  Chapped lips are caused by dehydration.  So, here are a few helpful tips to help cure and prevent those unsightly cracked lips.

1.) Mix 1 teaspoon of salt to 1 pint of cool water.
2.) Soak a washcloth in water and use as a compress over lips for 10 minutes.
3.) Once the flaky skin is softened, use the wash cloth to gently remove the dead skin.
4.) To sooth the lips, apply a thin coat of Vaseline.
5.) Lastly, to lock in moisture apply a lip balm with Bees Wax or Shea Butter.

Also:
*Avoid licking lips
*Use a humidifier in your home
*Avoid medicated lip balms- they can some times cause irritation.
* Eat food high in Calcium.
*Drink plenty of water
*Carry your lip balm with you and apply several times throughout the day.
* Use lip balms with SPF

Must Have Monday-Trish McEvoy Luxe Moisture Balm

One of life's true essentials!  This little balm in a stick is a bit pricey but I promise it lasts for a very long time! Luxe Moisture Balm SPF 15 is the cure for dry, chapped lips and so much more!  The Shea butter formula is soothing, nourishing and protecting! Here's the best part, you can also use it as a moisture boosting eye treatment, as a cuticle cream and to tame those annoying fly away hairs.  The little deodorant-like tube makes this product very convenient for traveling.  I always keep one in my carry on bag, by my night table, and during the summer months, I keep one handy in my beach bag!

Fragrance Friday: Red Roses by Jo Malone

Jo Malone's fragrance collection for the bath, body and home is simply irresistible!  Their fragrance combining philosophy allows you make a signature scent by layering two different colognes together or you can choose from one of many original scents.  The Vintage Gardenia has always been one of my favorites!

The new cologne in the collection is perfect for Valentines day!  Red Roses is made from seven different roses from around the world!  This scent is surprisingly very clean smelling.  With a heart of crushed violet leaves and hints of lemon and spearmint, it unfolds like a bouquet of fresh cut flowers right from the garden.

CT Locals:  Experience Red Roses or find your own signature scent with a Jo Malone Specialist at Chamard Vineyards on Thursday February 11th from 5:30 to 8:30.

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Cleaning up!

How to keep your brushes and combs nice and clean:

Run your comb through your brush and gently remove all of the hair strands.  Then, drop them in a sink filled with warm water and a dash of either baking soda or a drop of clarifying shampoo.  Let them soak for about 30 minutes.  Drain the sink and rinse your tools with fresh water, then let them air dry over night.

How to clean your makeup brushes:

Add a small drop of mild shampoo or brush wash to the palm of your hand.  Swish one brush at a time in the cleaner and rinse thoroughly with warm running water.  Remove all excess water from the brush and lay the brush on a flat surface to dry.  ( I suggest putting a towel down on a counter and laying brushes on top of the towel to absorb the moisture.)  Do NOT let the brushes dry standing up in a cup.- the water run down into the handle and loosen the hairs of the brush, causing shedding.
