Feature Friday by Kelly Sharkey

Meet Kerry O'Neil Moyer!

Kerry and her beloved Andrew were married on July 3rd, 2010.  July 3rd is a very special day as it was the day I was also married back in 2008.....lots of great memories seem to be created on that day!

Ok, so I had a slight spaz attack when I saw these pics from Justin and Mary Marantz.....they are just so gorgeous I couldn't choose just one or two to show you!

Kerry and Andrew were married at Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington, CT.  If you haven't checked out this spot yet, it is a must see!

For Kerry's hair, she wanted a soft side swept 'do to offset the gorgeous feather detail on her dress from The White Dress by the Shore in Clinton, CT.  Make up was done by our very own Miss Jennie.....I can't stand how gorgeous Kerry looked that day!

Flowers were done by the uber talented Yumiko and Hanna Floral Design in Mystic, CT and Kerry and Andrew's vision was brought to life by Wedding Row's very own Sarah True.

Congratulations Kerry and Andrew!  You are one beautiful couple!!

Guest Blogger Thursday: Say Hello to Sami Jo!

Hey all you lovely readers! As Jennie mentioned last week, my name is Sami (Sami Jo) and I'm the Editor/Writer for Poor & Pretty, a culture blog about being broke but still having fun and looking great. I'm super stoked to be a guest blogger for Jennie, an amazing and inspiring woman.

Before I unleash some cool & crafty DIY's, tutorials, and money-saving tips on you over my next posts, let me tell you a little about myself. I'm 23, a Communications undergrad at UConn, I love making cupcakes and soap (and sometimes cupcake soap!), and I was named after Heather Locklear's character from Dynasty (thanks a lot, Mom). My friend Mish and I started Poor & Pretty last December when we observed that there wasn't really a blog/magazine that discussed crafts, fashion, and beauty for girls like us with low budgets. We also wanted to challenge ourselves to find really cool things to do and places to go in Connecticut as a way of showing that our little state is full of exciting possibilities.

In May, after Mish started working more and having less time to write, I took over the blog. As a budding environmentalist and soon-to-be-entrepreneur, I'm currently on a mission to reduce my consumer footprint and make (or buy locally) as much of my food, clothing, and cosmetics as I possibly can. This journey has sparked numerous tutorials on Poor & Pretty, such as how to make your own chai tea latte, DIY astringent, sugar scrub, hair bows, and other hair accessories. It's also lead me to writing about others who are joining the handmade movement, as evidenced by my Etsy Spotlight monthly posts. It has also made me discover some really neat places like Tisane, Truffles Bakery, and of course, the Jennie Fresa Beauty Library!

I look forward to writing more for Jennie, but please don't hesitate to e-mail me (sami [at] poorandpretty.com) in the meantime if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about places I should visit, people to meet, or anything else about myself or Poor & Pretty!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Is it time to toss?

I always get asked the question, "how long should I keep my makeup?"  Here's the dilly my friends:

Toss any foundation or liquid products that have been sitting around for over a year.  Formulas can degrade and not only that, they can harbor bacteria.  Chances are if you haven't used it on over a year, it probably wasn't working for you anyway.

Mascara has about a 3 month shelf life and you don't want to mess with any products that you use on or around your eyes.  Sorry, I'm just reporting the honest facts here.  It's the one cosmetic product you should replenish most frequently.

Powder formulas, like shadows and blushes can last a little longer than other products, but if you notice a greasy film on the top layer, most likely it's time to toss it!!

Must Have Monday: Caudalie Beauty Elixir

I had to share yet another great find after raiding the medicine cabinet of my friend Rachael last weekend!

This part-toner, part serum mist of essential oils tones and soothes your skin!  If you are looking for a quick boost of radiance, this will do the trick!  I love applying it on a clean face right when I get out of the shower and again to set my makeup.  I've also been carrying it around in my purse, giving myself a quick spritz in the afternoon to refresh my complexion!

Available at Sephora!

Feature Friday by Lindsay Milan - Breakfast at Tiffany's

Happy Friday, JF Beauties!

Today, meet Olga!  She's a Beauty library bride that was married this past July, and today, I wanted to share some photos of when we first met for her hair and makeup trial.

Almost intstantly, Olga reminded me of Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany's, which was perfect, considering she wanted a classically elegant and sophisticated look for her wedding day!

For makeup, we kept it very fresh - a little tinted moisturizer here, a little powder to set there, and then we set to work on those gorgeous eyes of hers!

Check out this gorgeous gal - and this is with barely any makeup on yet!

For Olga's eyes, I used champagnes, taupes, 'greige' - the new buzzword for the "it" color this fall, a mix between grey and beige - and a bit of shimmery brown to contour.  I lined her eyes with JF Minerals' gel liner in a dark brown, pulling the line out a bit more for a sophisticated winged effect, and let's not forget about those lashes!  I gave Olga a few falsies for volume and length, and finished them off with black mascara.

Insider tip: For brides out there that aren't normally makeup wearers, individual false lashes are great for wedding day pictures to make eyes pop in a subtle way.  They come in short, medium and long lengths, and are more easily customizable to your personal beauty personality than the strips you see in drugstores.  Feel free to ask to try them at your beauty trial!

To complete Olga's makeup, I swept a bit of peach blush on the apples of her cheeks, a bit of highlighter on those amazing cheekbones, and brushed on peach lipstick, just a shade darker than her natural lip color, and topped it with gloss.

Isn't she just stunning??  And what did I tell you about the Audrey Hepburn vibe!

A beautiful bride!

Here are a couple pictures of her hair to round up this week's Feature Friday - have a wonderful weekend, beauties!

How amazing is that hair comb?!
Can't forget the veil!
Until next time!
xoxo

Slow and Mindful eating = Natural Weight Loss

Hi friends!

Having worked with many people around the issue of weight loss, I have learned that for every diet there is an equal or greater binge. Deprivation doesn’t work. Counting and measuring doesn’t equate as a sustainable way to keep your weight off.

In order to reach your ideal weight, most of us need to eat less and move more. Eating less can be a challenge in this society, especially as portions are huge, eating is social and our culture doesn’t promote healthy choices. Ask yourself this question: Do I eat for nutrients or for entertainment?

Start to eat consciously and slowly and watch the weight start to drop off. You’ll notice that you are satisfied sooner with less food. Here are some tips:
  • Eat while sitting down
  • Don’t eat in the car
  • Eat without distractions such as music, TV, the internet, or while reading
  • Chew your food - digestion starts n the mouth and you will assimilate more nutrients this way
  • Slow down! Make every bite count, and allow yourself to fully feel the pleasure from the food - taste, texture, and smell. Eating is supposed to be pleasurable!
  • Eat the right foods - you need to focus 50 % of your plate on raw veggies, limit or no oils, no salt, sugar, or dairy. Use another 20% on complex carbs i.e. brown rice or quinoa, 20% on steamed veggies, 10% on fruit and occasional bread,  20% on a cooked food like burritos, pasta, chili, or soup. This part includes lo-fat protein sources. (Remember, lots of veggies have protein and calcium!) Eat nuts and healthly fats like avocado and eat beans with every meal.

I recommend this Nutritarian Lifestyle Plan - it allows you to get the most nutrients into your body as possible, thus crowding out the bad stuff that doesn’t do your body any favors. And, you can eat a lot of food for less calories. For more info, check out EatRightAmerica.com.

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Watch the temp!

Although a nice, steamy shower feels great especially on cold days, dry heated air and hot water can cause havoc on your skin!!  I like to switch the water temp to luke warm right before getting out.  I also apply a body oil right before my final rinse.  I like this one by Neutrogena!  Sesame oil is great for softening and healing dry, scaly skin!  If I'm taking a bath, I simply add a few drops to the water and soak!  Be sure to pat dry and, if needed, apply a moisturizing lotion post shower!!

Must Have Monday: Pro Clarisonic

So, I'm here in NYC visiting my good friend Rachael!   You see, Rache is also a makeup artist, so we love sharing all our must have products with each other!  Once I have a chance to scour her medicine cabinet and try as many products as possible, I'll make a list of items for my wish list.  This time around, there was one cool-looking gadget on her vanity that really peeked my curiosity.  The Clarisonic is a professional-caliber brush that uses gentle sonic micro-massage action to cleanse deeply.  It clears pores without being too abrasive.  Clinical results include 6x more makeup removal than manual cleaning.  Overall, you minimize the appearance of fine lines, pores and wrinkles.  Rachael swears by this tool and promises that it helps to maintain even and clear looking skin!  Huh!  I might just have to get one of my own!!

Must Have Monday: Coconut Honey Mask

Anne Marie Gianni created her skin care line with love, thoughtfulness and intention- even down to the glass bottles the products come in.  Her products are totally chemical-free.  Everything in the product is on the label.

Recently I received a gift from Anne Marie, a beautiful sample package of some of her best selling products!  They are all amazing but there was one that I just fell in love with!

The coconut honey mask is great for dry, sun damaged or dull skin!  It's the perfect treatment to use after being out in the sun all summer and while heading into the dry cold months!  The live enzymes will nourish your inner and outer beauty!  Honey is high in Vitamin C, B and amino acids!

Added bonus--it smells delicious!  It's so natural, it's good enough to eat!

feature friday by Nedelyn Perry

This summer I had the pleasure of doing makeup for Michelle one of my lovely June brides.
Michelle asked me to create a natural look with just a pop of color!
Here is a step by step of how to achieve this look:

foundation: I used a mineral sheer tint in Porcelain and mixed it with a medium highlighter. Mixing these two products together gave her skin a light coverage with a soft glow.
concealer: using a small concealer brush I applied a light/medium color underneath the eyes and the area above her lips to accentuate her cupids bow.

eyebrows: using a brow brush I filled in Michelle's brows with an eyeshadow called "twig".
brow bone highlighter: Canary Diamond eye shadow.
eyelid: "dusk" eye shadow mixed with a bit of "sunstone" shadow all over the lid, then blending in an upward motion.
eyeliner: "black amethyst" eye shadow (eye shadow can be used as an eyeliner by simply dipping a liner brush in a little water and moistening the shadow).
lashes: black waterproof mascara
cheeks: I used a pinky color called "flirt" to give her a natural blushing look.
powder: I dusted a bit of mineral powder in "cream" on her forehead, nose and chin.

lip pencil: i filled in her lips with a natural lip liner called "buff".
lipstick: micro kiss bubble lipstick
and last but not least lip gloss in "Super Sweet".

*the makeup I used on Michelle is from a wonderful mineral makeup line created by Jennie Fresa and can be purchased exclusively at the Jennie Fresa Beauty Library in Clinton, CT.

Feature Friday by Kelly Sharkey

Meet Lauren (Fleischer) Hedde!

Lauren married her beloved on June 12th, 2010 (which happens to also be my birthday!) in Jeffersonville, Vermont at The Sterling Ridge Resort.

Miss Jennie and I met Lauren and her bridal party in the main house and let me just tell you, it was gorgeous.  This resort is a must see (and yet another destination that I'm hoping my husband will take me to).

Lauren had a very special member of her bridal party......the super talented photographer and sister of the groom, Maggie Conley. Maggie's team did the photos for the wedding and they are just gorgeous!

Lauren wanted a low side hair style with some loose curls and a side part.  We incorporated a gorgeous beaded headband to add a touch of bling to the look.  Lauren was the picture of perfection for her beautiful Vermont wedding.

I love this shot of Lauren and her mom......such a great pair!

Congrats to Lauren and her hubby!  I wish you both a lifetime of happiness!!
xoxo
