Feature Friday by Lindsay Milan - Bring on Spring...Smith, that is!

Happy Friday, JF Beauties!

And Happy New Year's too!

With all this snow lately, I thought, what better way to ring in the new year than with a feature on Spring Smith, a fantastically talented, up-and-coming photographer I had the pleasure of working with back in November.  Originally from Maine, Spring was in town for new headshots with Justin and Mary for her website, and yours truly provided hair and makeup for the shoot!
Photo courtesy of Justin & Mary
Spring reflects everything her name says about her.  She has such fresh, vibrant energy, and yields an incredible passion for her work.  She's also a delightful conversationalist, and within 5 minutes of meeting Spring, it felt like we'd known each other for years.  While I had the hair dryer and curling irons going, we laughed and commiserated over our quests for the "perfect pair" of jeans (Spring and I bonded over our height - we're both over 5'10"!)
Photo courtesy of Justin & Mary
For her headshots, Spring knew that she wanted clean, natural looking makeup, with a bit more emphasis on the eyes, so we added a few falsies to those open up those peepers, along with some champagne shimmer eyeshadow, and brown gel liner for precise definition.  You'll notice that Spring has insanely rockin' cheekbones, so we played them up by dusting a bit of highlighter on over her peach blush.  Check this gorgeous gal out!
Photo courtesy of Justin & Mary
For her hair, we blew it out, left it down, and then added movement with organic waves and curl.  For an added detail, we french braided a small section of hair to bobby pin back.  Loving the 'retro' vibe of these two photos!

Well, beauties, that's it for now!  Sending my best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy new year!

Cheers to a fabulous 2011!

Guest Blogger Thursday - Sami's DIY Lip Balm

Hello readers! I'm writing to you from sunny Los Angeles, where I'm visiting my uncle and hoping to do some shopping and cupcake eating!

Today, I'd like to share with you a fun and easy recipe for lip balm (I call it "Mind Your Own Beeswax Lip Balm," because I like my products to have sassy names). This recipe yields 1oz, but since 1oz is a lot of lip balm, I suggest using two 0.5 oz containers (I use tins because you can re-use/recycle them). Here's what you'll need:

  • 2 0.5 oz tins
  • 2 tablespoons grated beeswax or beeswax pastilles
  • 3 tablespoons coconut, castor, sunflower, or jojoba oil
  • 2 teaspoons vitamin E oil (optional, but I recommend it for its super-moisturizing properties)
Directions:

  • Melt the beeswax and oils together in the top of a double boiler, stirring semi-frequently to combine. If you don’t have a double boiler, put the beeswax and oils in a Pyrex measuring cup within a pot of water (see image above).
  • Once melted, carefully remove from heat and poor into your tin, let cool for about 30 minutes or so and voilĂ ! Your very own lip balm!

A tip on finding ingredients: most can be found at your local organic supermarket (Whole Foods) or farmer’s market if you live near one. I had a hard time finding beeswax, so I ended up buying most of my ingredients online from Mountain Rose Herbs. They sell a lot of excellent supplies for making your own cosmetics (essential oils, butters, hydrosols, massage oils, etc), plus a variety of spices, herbs, teas, and jars to put them in! Many of their products are also certified organic and/or fair trade, so I really love buying from them.

Happy DIY-ing and have a safe, happy, and healthy new year!

P.S. In case you missed it, check out my sugar scrub DIY!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Lash Builder

Every woman has one makeup product that they can't live without.  For me, it's mascara!  I love the eye opening effect that mascara gives.

I picked of this trick recently from a fellow makeup artist and thought it was too good not to share!

Using a fluffy eye shadow brush, dust a little loose face powder to clean, damp lashes to thicken them.  Then, apply mascara as usual.  The result is thicker, fuller looking lashes!!!

Must Have Monday: Kersastase Elixir Ultime Oil

I'm pretty much obsessed with all Kerastase Products!  They are luxurious, smell great and I can definitely see a difference when I use them.

When I went to my salon recently to replenish my hair mask, I got a sample of their new hair oil-- Kerastase Elixir Ultime!

If you're thinking your hair is too fine to use a hair oil, I'm here to tell you you're wrong!!  Since this oil is absorbed into the cuticle rather than coating just the surface, you can use it without feeling like an oil slick!  Hair is transformed into silky, shiny, and weightless locks!

Unlike other formulas, this products is a bend of four prized oils including Argan (derived from Morocco and is one of the rarest in the world), Cameilla, Maize and Pracaxi.

I love the versatility!!

Use it as a pre-cleanse by rubbing a dab to the palm of hands and apply to dry hair ( focus on the ends).  Leave on a few minutes and shampoo as normal.  (This is how I have been using it!!!)

Or

Before Blow Dry-  Use it as a leave-in-conditioner when hair needs that extra nourishment.

Or

Use it as a finishing product to keep frizz in control and for that extra bit of shine!

Your Holistic Nutrition Coach Jane says, "Go ahead, have some NOG!!"

Hello Goddesses!

Are you getting ready for your wedding? Worried about how to handle the holiday feasting? I want to help you stay sane during this time. It is so important to give yourself a break now and then, especially during the holidays. Everyone around you is eating, drinking, laughing, enjoying...and that is the key thing to remember: ENJOYING. If you get too stressed out over what and how much you are eating during this time, you will be miserable. You don’t deserve this, not as you enter the new year and as you enter into your new phase in life as a married woman.

I remember when I was prepping for my wedding....I was working out at the gym like a madwoman, counting calories, portions, and being really hard on myself for some crazy desire to be PERFECT. Well guess what? Perfection is the lowest common denominator, because it is NOT POSSIBLE. You are who you are, you work hard, you will be beautiful on your big day. Even if you allow yourself some egg nog and holiday cheer. Just as your body knows how to breathe, your body knows what to do with the food. Your body knows how to digest it. Your body knows how to get the nutrients out of it. So just breathe and relax, and ENJOY.

I am here as a living testament that it is possible to find a way to love your body no matter what size you currently are. It is possible to reach your ideal weight not with dieting, but through lifestyle changes that are easy and doable. It is possible to ENJOY your life and to ENJOY food. My general guideline with my clients is if you eat well and make the right choices 90% of the time, then the other 10% you can actually live your life. After the new year, I will be providing all of you brides-to-be with nutrition tips and resources. For now, just drink lots of water, and let yourself take pleasure in the holidays. Remember, for every diet, there is an equal or greater binge - so you are MUCH better off allowing yourself some pleasure in the holidays treats rather than depriving and finding yourself binging later. NO GUILT LADIES. You are all goddesses! Here’s to a Happy New Year and  heres to your health in 2011! I am here to support you, and would like to offer the first 25 people who email me at janescottashley@gmail.com a FREE nutrition session. I look forward to it!

Peace & Veggies,

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Treating a cold sore

It never fails.  Every time you have an important meeting, major event or special party to attend, the dreaded cold sore, sometimes called, fever blister raises it's ugly head.  Although there isn't a cure for cold sores--you either carry the virus or you don't--there are a few remedies for treating it.

Keep it clean and dry.  Clean the cold sore with a wash cloth, soap and warm water.  Pat dry.  This will minimize itching and prevent spreading.

Use an anesthetic ointment like camphor oil to alleviate pain.  Also, petroleum-based products help to prevent any secondary infection from bacteria as well as expedite healing.

Take a Vitamin B supplements and Lysine, an essential amino acid that aids in the prevention of future breakouts.

Dab it with lavender essential oil.  Lavender is very antiseptic and will keep to dry out that sucker.  Just be sure not get it in your mouth.

 A few other tips:

Get rid of your tooth brush and makeup products that you used while you had the sore or right before you got it.

Get plenty of sleep, a good work out and drink plenty of OJ.

If you get more than 3 sores a year, speak to your physician.

Beauty Tip Tuesday: A Beautiful Tree

I love shopping......even shopping for a christmas tree!  The closer to Christmas you buy it, the better!  Unfortunately for me, I insisted on getting our tree the day after Thanksgiving and now I'm walking on needles with 11 days until Christmas!

I just read about a cool trick that will help keep your tree looking vibrant and fresh!  I thought I would pass along the tip!

Fill your tree stand with 7UP.  ( about 2 small bottles) as the sugar helps the tree retain it's needles!

Must Have Monday: Gloves in a Bottle

Here's a product that is recommended by Dermatologists around the world!  Our pretty little fingers need attention too!  Dry hands and feet are a common concern this time of year!  In stead of reapplying moisturizer over and over again, try Gloves in Bottle .  This lotion provides a protective barrier against wind and cold air.  It's more like an ointment in texture and promises to KEEP your elbows, feet, and hands silky smooth!

Guest Blogger Thursday: Sami's Handmade Gift Picks

It's December, and that means hectic holiday shopping! Because I have a limited budget, but oodles of creativity, I've always been a fan of giving and receiving handmade gifts. Check your local craft stores and small businesses for a list of upcoming craft shows to support your local crafters, but if you can't make any craft shows, don't forget about all of the amazing things you can find on Etsy! I've put together a list of a few things that I find really neat:

1. Zebra/Turquoise Tea Set by Lovely Mud Pottery. I knew this was going to make the list as soon as I saw the pretty turquoise color (because it reminds me of the Jennie Fresa Beauty Library!). This handmade and hand-painted tea set is perfect for a tea lover, collector of pottery, or just a fun gift for a sassy friend!

2. Cupcake Soap by Poor & Pretty. Last weekend, I opened up my own Etsy shop, where I sell cupcake soaps! Yes, soaps in the form of cupcakes! The bottom "cake" part is solid soap, scented and colored, and the top "frosting" part is whipped, foaming bath butter, scented like buttercream frosting and topped with exfoliating jojoba beads. They're perfect for good little boys and girls (and big ones, too!)

3. 2011 Wall Calendar by MyZoetrope. I love Michelle's bright, colorful, and cheerful artwork, and this wall calendar will keep you cheerful all year long!

4. I Love Candycanes - Lost and Found Funky Chunky Button Bracelet by DDitta. This is such a neat idea! Each bracelet is different because "found" buttons are used. Talk about a one of a kind gift!

5. Lucienne Handwarmers by Rebekah Shaddy. These knitted handwarmers are sweet and elegant, with hand-knitted flowers on top. Rebekah has a variety of different handwarmers, headbands, and hats, so make sure you check them all out.

6. It's A Wonderful Life Necklace by Pink Shell Motel. This time of year, my dad always makes us watch "It's A Wonderful Life," and for good reason. It's such an uplifting and inspiring movie. This handstamped necklace, made with fresh water pearl, was a natural addition to my handmade gift list.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

What's Happening Wednesday: E-Commerce Web Site Coming soon!

The wait is almost over!!

Very soon our friends, far and near, will be able to purchase Jennie Fresa Mineral Makeup products with a click of a button!!

Julia Balfour is Co-owneer and Director of Creative Services.  She is a print designer as well as a multi-media designer.  Julia has worked with big names in the cosmetic world, Estee Lauder and Clinique just to name a few, making the choice to hire this firm very easy for me!
photo by Anna Sawin

Chelsea Tyler is Co-Owner and Director of Communications--A real tiger in the public relations department.  With Chelsea being a friend of mine, I also felt personal comfort in choosing to work with D&V!  Friendship aside though, if there is going to be anyone handling my PR, it will be Chelsea Tyler!  She is a true go-getter and has exceptionally high standards when is comes to delivering quality services to her clients.

photo by Anna Sawin

Also collaborating on this project is photographer, Anna Sawin.  Anna was an obvious choice for me.  I have worked with her in the past, mostly with brides and I have always enjoyed her easy manner and kind spirit, which is why brides LOVE her too!!  She has a master eye for detail so I knew she would capture the essence of my products and the beauty of my new and improved packaging!

Yesterday I met with Anna for a photo shoot here at JF Beauty Library!  We had a blast!!  Thank you, Anna for coming to spend the day with me!!!   I can not wait to get the pictures, share them with the girls at Design and Voice and watch the new site come to life!!

Stay tuned.....we'll be launching in early 2011!!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Try natural oils

Applying rich natural oils at night can really help to replenish parched and thirsty skin, especially during the chilly winter months.  Natural oils don't have any binding agents in them like creams and will penetrate much deeper into the skin, giving you more bang for your buck!!  It may be tough to get used to the feeling on your skin at first, but I promise you'll see amazing results.

Visit the Jennie Fresa Beauty Library for a selection of certified organic oils!

Twas the Night Before the Wedding

Two years ago.........

Twas the night before the wedding, when all through Old Lyme

Excitement was stirring, for wedding bells would soon chime;

The Bee and Thistle Inn was decorated with care,

In hope that the wedding would be a great affair;

The bride was nestled all snug in her bed, while visions of her "Doog" danced in her head;

And Patty with a smile and Peg with a laugh, has just settled down for an Irish nightcap,

The proudest of parents, with love their hearts,

They fondly remembered how this love story did start.

On Christmas morning with a grudge, to Church Jennie dashed,

She sat next to Doug and knew in a flash.

She pondered the thought, was it love at first sight

It would become clear on New Year's Eve night,

When what to Jennie's wondering eyes should appear,

But Doug at her door with champagne and beer.

Though Jennie was tired and under the weather,

With Doug by her side she suddenly felt better.

She picked up the phone, her heart never the same,

And she whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

Now Meredith!  Now Jill, Kim and Steffie!

On Tal!  On Racheal!  On Aunt Gina and Patty!

You wont believe it!  I found Mr.  Right!

Now hurry and meet him!  He's the love of my life!

Jennie was working for Trish and about to head west,

When Doug told her he loved her and hoped for the best,

While her heart said yes, and her mind said no,

She would stay in New York, and give it a go.

And then, in a twinkling, they were a couple at last,

Between Branford and the city, they were having a blast.

And before long, their relationship did grow.

So off to Branford Jennie did go.

Doug is a thoughtful young lad when it comes to his love,

For Jennie he often goes beyond and above;

About one Christmas present, he didn't utter a peep,

A little black lab, name Ellie, for the back of the jeep!

At Rockefeller Center another special surprise,

A diamond in his pocket, a twinkle in his eyes;

The crowd looked on, with Doug on bended knee,

He proposed to Jennie beneath that famous Christmas tree!

Now back to the inn, the bonfire burning bright,

They enjoyed pizza and smores on the rehearsal dinner night;

While the groom at the bar thought to himself,

This is my last night as a jolly old elf!

With a scratch of his beard and tilt of his head,

This was the moment he would most dread;

He knew in his heart it really had to go,

The beard on his face was a wedding no-no!

Morning would come, and with Nate by his side,

Doug waited anxiously to see his beautiful bride;

At last here they were, it all came down to this,

Finally saying "I do" and sealing it with a kiss;

The guests sprang to their feet, and let out a cheer,

It certainly is the most wonderful time of the year!

And we heard them exclaim to the new husband and wife,

"Congratulations to all and to Jennie and Doug a good life"!

Written lovingly by my friends-- Kim, Talene, Meredith, Jill, Steff and Racheal

Now, off to NYC to celebrate our 2nd anniversary!!

Back to blogging on Tuesday!  Until then........

I have a confession....

Hi friends,
Well, I have a confession to make. And because I am a Holistic Nutrition Coach, I am going to be as transparent and vulnerable as possible, ok?

I have been overeating.

Yes, that's right, I have lost my connection to my inner knowing and trust that usually allows me to stay steady and make the best choices most of the time. I have been eating portions that are too big - it is more food than my body needs, and it's been messing up my digestion and how I feel. I am actually sick with a cold, now, and I believe that my immunity is lowered because of the quantity of sugar and heavy foods that I've been consuming.

You know what? I have been feeling SO guilty about it because this is the stuff I TEACH my clients! How can I help others when I can't even follow my own advice? Imagine this scenario and see if you relate: You see and smell the food on the table, the crisp, golden turkey, the creamy mashed potatoes, the pumpkin pie with whipped cream, the egg nog, the wine.... and because it is the holidays, everyone is doing it and it feels so GOOD to partake. Food is comforting! We all know how it feels to slowly let that dark chocolate melt in your mouth, and how it feels like a "hug" from the inside, right? And we want lots of hugs from the inside when we aren't necessarily getting them from the outside.

So I've had this realization and am now recommitting to my healthier lifestyle choices which include smaller portions, eating 5 small meals/day, not drinking water at meals (to aid in digestion), taking my supplements, and exercising. And resting. And taking care of myself by getting a massage. And lighting a candle in the morning and meditating for 5 minutes.

I also truly believe that as a health coach, it is my own experiences which continue to give me the wisdom I need in order to help other women. And helping other women be healthy and conquer their stress and find their true essence inside, is one of the greatest joys of my life. Thanks for letting me share this today.  As your holiday "Gift of Health," I'd like to offer you all a free one-on-one nutrition session. Just email me at janescottashley@gmail.com with "Gift of Health" in the subject line. I look forward to helping you recommitment to YOUR health this year.

Peace & Veggies,
Jane
